The Danube swells
THE RIVER Danube’s flood wave has now reached the Ukraine after affecting many Balkan communities in its wake. Ukrainian emergency teams are building sandbag barriers in the Odessa region and several thousand people have been removed from their homes. The Danube has reached its highest level since 1895 in Romania, and the floods have caused huge economic damage in the region.
