On a glorious spring morning at Balaia Bowling Club in the Balaia Golf Village, more than 80 bowlers and supporters from clubs throughout the Algarve attended a memorial competition and lunch in memory of a former founder member, Barbara ‘Babs’ Moss, who passed away last year.
Club Captain Peter Moss, along with members, had organised the event in the form of a ’round robin’ competition which was narrowly won by the Balaia ‘A’ team comprising of Jean and Peter King, Tom Sanderson and Stuart Greenwood.
The victors received the Barbara Moss Memorial Plaque, which now sits proudly in the clubhouse trophy cabinet.
As Babs would have wished, bowlers representing all clubs within Bowls Algarve and Bowls Portugal generously supported the day, from which proceeds were donated to Albufeira Bombeiros.
Following presentations, Club Secretary Jill Dunkey, who had ensured the smooth running of the event, announced that a sum of €800 had been raised and would be presented to the Bombeiros.
Club members attending the roll-up session last week were surprised to see a large turntable fire engine arrive, with Senior Officer António and two colleagues on board. Captain Peter gave a short impromptu bowling lesson before handing over the cheque.
Senior Officer António thanked all concerned and stressed the importance of such donations in their efforts to maintain the invaluable services of the firefighters.
