Che Lagoense badminton aces Pedro Martins and Thelma Santos both reached the semi-finals of the Brazilian Open and have already been confirmed as the best male and female players from the Iberian Peninsula. The 20-year-old Martins, now ranked No57 in the world, narrowly lost out 21-19, 24-26, 22-24 to US player Hock Lai Lee while Santos (No69) was beaten 16-21, 21-6, 14-21 by Germany’s Nicole Grether. While the young Algarvians should reach the top of their game by the 2012 Olympics in London, ‘Che Lagoense’ club mates have been inspired: Daniela Conceiçao occupied 3rd and 2nd place in the ladies singles and doubles events respectively at the recent ‘Luxemburg Young Stars’ international tournament, while the club’s teams swept all before them during the start of the national league season.
