Back to school with Clínica Vivina Cabrita

For children and youngsters who are starting the school year, this is the ideal time for a general evaluation of their health, which should include a visit to the ophthalmologist, since a visual deficit can affect their performance and relationship with school.

School performance may be impaired when the child suffers from any pathology that conditions their vision, which can cause apathy or lack of interest during classes, as well as agitated behaviour and lack of concentration. The child’s parents or caregivers should talk to and question the teacher about their behaviour and attitude in the classroom, in order to identify signs that may be indicative of visual problems. The most common are:

  • Watching television and using other electronic devices too close to their eyes;
  • Poor posture and difficulty performing school or leisure tasks, such as drawing;
  • Squinting to focus objects/ images;
  • Skipping sentences while reading;
  • Saying they don’t like going to school or presenting difficulties in the learning process;
  • Frequent headaches;
  • Sensitivity to light.

It is desirable, even in the absence of any complaints, to schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist at the beginning of the school year. Even children and youngsters who have not shown signs in the past should be checked, since we must not forget that in this age group both growth and some behavioural factors, such as very prolonged efforts to focus at close range and little time of sun exposure, can introduce profound changes in the eye development and visual health.

If you already wear glasses, the back-to-school period is ideal for a re-evaluation by your eye doctor to update your refraction.

When it’s time to study, it’s important to be aware of these recommendations that contribute to good eye and visual health:

  • Choose a good lighting;
  • The chair and desk should be suitable for reading tasks to avoid bad posture;
  • Reading distance should be more than 25 cm;
  • Take regular breaks;
  • Computer and television screens should be positioned in order to avoid unwanted reflections;
  • When working at the computer, the eyes be at a higher level (15 to 20⁰ angle).

Should your child require the use of glasses, Clínica Vivina Cabrita recommends you consider:

  • 100% protection against UV rays;
  • Protection against blue light;
  • Lightweight and comfortable frame;
  • Scratch-resistant lenses.

It is also recommended that children or youngsters that use computer devices for a long time, intersperse these moments with breaks and outdoor activities.

Remember that when choosing glasses, you should also take into account the child’s opinion, so that when using them they feel comfortable and wear them naturally and without you having to insist.

Paediatric ophthalmology consultations should be periodic and eye care should be monitored by adults, since children do not always speak up about their vision problems. Eyes are delicate and medical follow-up is essential throughout the child’s growth.
