Baby seal update

More information has come to light about the baby seal that was stranded on the beach in Praia do Barranco, in Vila do Bispo (see last week’s The Resident).

Marco Bragança from Zoomarine’s Porto d’Abrigo, the Rehabilitation Centre for Marine Species, contacted The Resident, confirming that the baby seal was a female Hooded seal calf and, when taken to Zoomarine, weighed 21.3kg – underweight for her age, but not dramatically so.

Dara, the name given to the calf by Zoomarine staff, which means “angel of rains and rivers”, is eating well and very aggressive to humans, as she should be, as the objective of the staff at Zoomarine is to eventually return her to the wild.
