Anyone with a piano in the Azores will now be wondering what on earth to do. The archipelago’s last piano tuner has packed up his tuning forks and moved to the mainland. Márcio Vargas has cited a sad “disinvestment in culture” that has seen around 80% of concerts that used to take place in the Azores discontinued. Says Lusa, Márcio Vargas is one of only eight accredited tuners in the whole of Portugal. “It is regrettable”, he told the news agency over his move. “Fifteen years of work, in which I had the opportunity to put the region on the piano route and itineraries. The pianos were always in condition. When I started, most of the pianos were in a sorry state. Now, I don’t know what will happen”.
