Azores bids for whale heritage site status

The Azores will be submitting a candidacy for ”Whale Heritage Site’ status before the end of the year, reports Lusa today. It is a distinction awarded to destinations that promote sustainable whale watching, and is backed by a ‘collaboration between businesses and scientists”. One of these – biologist José Azevedo – believes the certification, which he thinks is very likely to come, “will be a stimulus” to “deepen the relationship of the Azores and Azoreans with cetaceans, as living beings and as part of a dynamic oceanic ecosystem.”
