Award-winning Portuguese pianist to perform for Algarvian “Amigos”

Young Portuguese pianist Ana Beatriz Ferreira will give two concerts in December at Os Agostos country estate, located above Santa Bárbara de Nexe and near Bordeira.

On December 13, Ana Beatriz will play pieces by Beethoven, Vianna da Motta, Debussy and Prokofiev and on the 15th the pianist will play selections from Bomtempo, Beethoven, Liszt, Lopes-Graça and Prokofiev.

Ana Beatriz was born in Lisbon in 1991. She began her piano studies when she was seven. She studied at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, graduating in 2009 and also receiving the Order of Merit from the Portuguese Ministry of Education for the highest possible mark. She continued her studies at London’s Royal College of Music (RCM) under Ruth Nye MBE and Dina Parakhina, receiving her Bachelor of Music. Further studies at the RCM led to her completing her Master of Performance earlier this year. She has undertaken master classes with world renowned musicians.

Ana Beatriz has now started a PhD course at the University of Aveiro with a thesis on the work of Portuguese composer Joly Braga Santos. He was born in Lisbon in 1924 and died there in 1988 at the peak of his musical creativity.

His piano concerto, written in 1973, was premiered in 1981. It remained unpublished and the manuscript kept in the National Portuguese Library. Ana Beatriz first became aware of its existence in 2014. After studying the score, she became fascinated by its musical language and the combination of old and new. She resolved to perform this work in London at the St. James’s in Piccadilly, in partnership with Spanish conductor Pablo Urbina and the In Tune Orchestra.

The concert was done with the support of the Portuguese Embassy and the patronage of Michael Savage. In the audience was the Portuguese Ambassador and his wife, and the composer’s sister.

Ana Beatriz is an engaged soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. She has won several prizes and awards, including first prize at Maria Christina Pimentel National Competition, first prize at Lopes-Graça Competition and three merit and excellence awards by Eugénio de Almeida Foundation. Ana Beatriz will soon embark on a short concert tour in England and later in Canada.

She is in the process of finalising a recording contract to play with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in spring 2017 at the Royal Festival Hall.

Amigos de Música concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. Entry donation is €25 per person.

The Amigos de Música is an international group of around 90 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organisation and celebrated its 25th anniversary last year.
