German pianist Alexander Schimpf will be giving two concerts in the Algarve this month at the 18th century Os Agostos country estate near Bordeira. The first will be on Tuesday, May 17 and will feature compositions by Brahms, Scriabin and Beethoven. On Thursday, May 19 Alexander will play compositions by Chopin, Sieber, Poulenc, Bartok and Debussy.
Alexander Schimpf was born in Göttingen in 1981. He initially studied the piano in Hanover and later at the Musikhochschule Dresden and in Wϋrzburg. He went on to win a series of competitions – the first being the 2008 German Music Competition (a distinction that no pianist had earned for 14 years).
He then won the First Prize at the 2009 International Beethoven Competition in Vienna and finally emerging as the first German pianist ever to win the First Prize at the 2011 Cleveland International Piano Competition.
His final performance at Severance Hall with the renowned Cleveland Orchestra was given a standing ovation and additionally honoured with the Audience Favourite Prize.
Alexander made his debut appearance at Carnegie Hall in 2011 and has performed frequently throughout the USA since then. He has performed in recital in Europe and several times in South America.
In recent years, he has appeared as a soloist with the St. Petersburg Marinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Prague Philharmonia and the “Beethoven Orchestra” Bonn.
Alexander has collaborated with noted chamber music partners including the violinist Christian Tetzlaff, cellist Julian Steckel, the American String Quartet and the Armida String Quartet.
He has made a number of recordings of which the most recent a CD featuring works by Brahms, Debussy and Beethoven. In November 2013, Alexander was presented with the “Bavarian State Award for the Advancement of the Arts” in Munich.
Organised by the Amigos de Música, concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7pm sharp. Doors open at 6pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. Entry donation is €25 per person for guests and non-members.
