Aveleda Alvarinho

A hard one to beat at less than €5

With Christmas around the corner many of us start thinking about stocking up on some wine for all those thirsty friends and relatives who drink us dry over the festive season.

I’m not talking about wine for Christmas dinner here but rather a decent quaffing wine that is sufficiently good to please a connoisseur and easy-drinking enough for those on whom more expensive wine is wasted.

It’s fairly easy to get a decent bottle of white wine for considerably less than €5 – think Fiuza Sauvignon Blanc for instance – but to find a decent wine in this price range from Portugal’s most noble white variety, Alvarinho, is more challenging.

This one from Quinta da Aveleda, one of the biggest and longest established Vinho Verde houses, really stands out. The wine has a clean fresh nose with subtle tropical and citric fruit notes, and is smooth and elegant in the mouth. The finish is a little weak but at less than €5 (€4.99 at Apolónia) it represents excellent value for money.
