Where has the time gone? I can’t believe that summer is nearly over. I got a bit of a reality check this week at my local shopping centre. Woolly jumpers, jackets and boots all heaving out of every shop! While I don’t think I’m ready to even look at these yet, I’m quite happy to purchase a few makeup items to see me transition into autumn from summer.
So, what’s on trend for beauty for autumn 2021? While bobs, strong fringes and wet-look waves are on trend for hair, makeup trends can be clearly seen from recent high fashion brand catwalks such as Dior, Chanel and Versace. They are taking inspiration from 90s makeup, so expect colourful bright eyes and rich gloss. Doesn’t it sound fun?!
Winged eyeliner is huge for this autumn. For many of us, it’s never really gone away. And this season, we will be taking inspiration from the upstaged winged liner as seen on the Dior Haute Couture catwalk. With all of the mask wearing in our future, it really is about the eyes. And not just black eyeliner; dark blues and forest greens are going to be really popular.
Coloured mascara is also going to be back with a bang. It’s great to see all this makeup on the catwalk, but some of us (including me) just don’t have the eye shape to carry off a winged liner. We can still use the liner, but just no big Cleopatra flick.
For those lucky enough to be able to do a flick, it takes practice but, once you’ve mastered it, you will never look back. I have tried so many products to create this flick on my clients, but I will forever use Sephora Collection Black Ink Fine Line. It has a very fine tip, and glides on like butter and doesn’t budge. It’s also waterproof and it’s the easiest one to use for beginners. Its price, at only €12.99, is fantastic compared to the bigger brands. What I also love about this is that is doesn’t weakly just dry, it holds its wetness for a long time. Just make sure to pop the lid back on once you’ve finished using it.
Fresh, monochromatic skin is not going anywhere. It’s all about natural-looking, healthy skin. Nothing full coverage, it’s all about seeing your natural beauty coming through ladies! Opt for more sheer formulas that let skin texture and even freckles come through. Just add a small pop of concealer under the eyes and – voilà! – you’re ready to go! Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 50 is my go-to for this look. It comes in 16 shades and is extremely lightweight and beautiful on the skin. It’s buildable and has a lovely looking radiance, which I love. This is a constant in my makeup kit.
While neutral eyeshadows are always in, bright intense shades in blue, deep purples and greens are making a huge play this autumn. Thinking smoldering and sexy, nothing has to be too precise as that grunge look is going to be really popular and was seen on most catwalks recently.
I have just recently fallen back in love with MAC cosmetics eyeshadows. These were the Holy Grail when I started doing makeup. Their colours are just amazing and are highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way. With eight hours duration and a super smooth non-crease colour, they really make a statement. Personally, I love the plum intense shadow called “Power to the purple”. Amazing for making all eye colours pop.
With mask mandates starting to lift, the playfulness of showing off your pout has returned. Whether it’s super glossy or satin lip, gloss is one of the top items this autumn. It can be worn alone, or as a topper on lipstick. I adore Chanel’s Rouge Coco Gloss. It’s non-sticky and ultra-light, has 24 shades and contains coconut oil, peptides and vitamin E. A nice little treat to yourself. For autumn, I love the shade Caractere, a beautiful deep plum pink, perfect for autumn and winter.
