Automation “will destroy 421,000 jobs” in northern Portugal by 2030

A study by the Portuguese business confederation has predicted that automation will destroy 421,000 jobs in northern Portugal by 2030 – the majority of them in the textile industry. But 227,000 will be ‘created’, requiring workers to ‘retrain’ in order to perform them. “The Future of Work in Portugal – Impact on northern areas” found that only 11% of the current workforce is “highly qualified”, with 65% considered ‘poorly qualified’.
