August’s ‘unprecedented heatwave’ caused €9 million in damages for Lisbon vineyards

The unprecedented heatwave that hit the country earlier this month, seeing temperatures nudging 48ºC in numerous parts of the country, caused unprecedented damages – in the region of losses of €9 million – to Lisbon wine producers. According to Bernard Gouvêa, president of the region’s wine producing commission, growers lost 30% of their production. The vineyards of Arruda dos Vinhos, Alenquer and Torres vedras being the areas worst affected.
