Atlantic mishap

The exciting duel between Beluga Racer and Desafio Cabo de Hornos during the fifth and last leg of the Portimão Global Ocean race may have been curtailed.

The first named German long-time leaders suffered damage to their main mast which leaves joint skippers Boris Herrmann and Felix Oehme limping towards the Azores, only 2,000 agonising miles short of completing the circumnavigation of the globe in front.

Their Chilean rivals, and now main beneficiaries, Felipe Cubillos and Jose Munoz, already enjoying a narrow advantage following last Thursday’s scramble for pole position out of Charleston, have now been able to extend that lead to 60 miles and look set to reach Portimão in first place later this month.
