ASAE is legal

Portugal’s Constitutional Court has ruled that the Economic and Food Safety Authority (ASAE) is a legitimate organisation, contrary to the Lisbon Court of Appeal, which outlawed some of its functions.

Created in 2007 by the socialist government party, ASAE is an administrative authority specialising in food security and economic surveillance.

It is also responsible for assessing and communicating risks in the food chain, and to ensure the discipline of economic activities in food and non-food sectors, plus the supervision of compliance with legislation.
