Art prize: calling all Algarve secondary schools

The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) has announced the launch of the Algarve Secondary Schools’ Art Prize.

“The main purpose of the prize is to inspire, encourage and reward young artists in the community, to encourage cultural development and raise funds for disadvantaged children in the region,” said Nigel Anteney-Hoare, MD of Sovereign – Consultoria Lda, from the group’s Lagoa branch.

The competition will follow the format of similar successful events already held by SAF in Hong Kong, Guernsey and Bahrain (see www.sovereignartfoundation.com)

All Algarve Secondary Schools will be invited to submit five pupils’ artworks for review by a panel of judges who will select, what is in their opinion, the best 20. These final 20 artworks will be exhibited to the public at various locations in the Algarve.

The 20 artworks will be judged and the two winners will be announced at a gala event in May 2017, with monetary prizes being awarded to both the winning artists and their schools. A third artwork, which has been voted by the public, both online and directly during the public exhibitions, will also receive a prize.

Following the judging, all 20 artworks will be auctioned to the public with the proceeds being divided between the artists and SAF’s chosen local charity for the 2016/2017 prize, APEXA – Instituição Particular de Solidariedade Social who provides art and sports programmes for children and young adults.

The prize will be formally opened at the beginning of the school year 2016/2017, in September, with artworks being digitally submitted for initial judging by January 31, 2017.

The event is organised by Sovereign-Consultoria Lda, and has the support of media partners, the Open Media Group, publishers of the Resident, also based in Lagoa.
