A 51-year-old man suspected of starting a fire with a cigarette lighter at Lagoas do Poço da Figueira in Tunes was arrested by the GNR police on Monday.
A GNR spokesperson revealed that a patrol car from the Silves branch made its way to the location of the fire at around 5pm and was able to arrest the arsonist who had been in trouble with the law in the past due to similar offences. The flames devoured two hectares of land.
The suspect is being held in custody and was due to appear in Silves court to answer the charge.
