Arson arrests

• GUARDA POLICE, in collaboration with Fundão GNR, have detained a 22-year-old unemployed herdsman, who is suspected of starting a forest fire that occurred in the parish of Fatela, in Fundão (inner central Portugal), on June 20. The fire consumed an area of around five hectares, composed of pine and cork trees, causing damage estimated at 35,000 euros. The fire also put a vast pine forest at risk, calculated at more than 100 hectares, however, luckily the flames were put out by fire fighters on the ground and via aerial support. The suspect is currently awaiting trial.

• POLICE IN Coimbra recently identified and detained a 30-year-old herdsman, who is suspected of deliberately lighting fires in the Castelo Branco area (inner central Portugal). The man has been bailed pending trial, however, he must report regularly to the police station.
