Arrested migrants to be deported as search continues for at least 13 who have gone AWOL

The three Moroccan migrants who were arrested on Monday in Vila Real de Santo António after arriving in the Algarve illegally by boat with at least 13 others (click here) are due to be deported as authorities continue to search for those who are missing.

A Faro PSP police source has told Lusa news agency that the three migrants are being kept at Faro Airport’s temporary accommodation centre while their “expulsion from national territory procedure is prepared”.

The same source added that authorities are still searching for the other migrants who are believed to have arrived on the same boat. He explained that “while it is possible that some of them remain on national soil, they may also have travelled to Spain”.

This was the seventh boat from the north of Africa to arrive illegally on the Algarve’s shore since December 2019.
