Around 60% of Algarve’s care home residents and workers tested for Covid-19

The Algarve is well on its way to having tested all care home residents and workers for Covid-19 – around 60% of them have already been tested.

Speaking to Rádio Observador, José Apolinário, secretary of state for fisheries who in the present reality is coordinating the Algarve’s regional plan to fight Covid-19, said that between 400 and 500 tests are being carried out every day in the Algarve.

He added that over 20 cases have been detected at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia care home in Boliqueime, as well as five in other care homes across the region.

The secretary of state said the focus is on protecting those who are most vulnerable to the virus.

There has also been an attempt to raise awareness about the importance of social distancing among foreign agricultural workers who often live together in close quarters.

“We have tried to carry out awareness campaigns, in their mother tongues, to ensure that they respect social distancing recommendations and are committed to this battle against the pandemic,” he said.
