Army sergeant Ricardo Mendes is about to set off on a 3000km solo cycle ride from Rome to Fátima to raise awareness and funds for Portugal’s Refood (food collection and distribution) project. Mendes, 42, will be leaving the Vatican on Sunday (August 31) and hopes to arrive in Fátima on October 5 (Republic Day). This will be his third major charity cycle, but the first that he is attempting on his own.
