Armed man causes panic on Lisbon’s 25 de Abril bridge

Drivers were gripped by a new panic on Lisbon’s 25 de Abril bridge yesterday (Wednesday), weeks after the bomb-scare that left rush-hour traffic fuming. This time it was a 45-year-old man pointing a gun to his own head and threatening to pull the trigger.

The incident took place at the point where cars stack up waiting to go through toll booths on the southern side, near Almada.

Police were quickly called, the man wrestled to the ground, and the gun – a starter pistol – removed from his grip.

The man was then transported to Almada’s Garcia de Orta Hospital where he was detained for observation due to a psychiatric disorder.

Traffic flow, interrupted by the incident, soon returned to normal.
