Armed forces to shadow Russian warships sailing through waters

The Portuguese armed forces are going to accompany two Russian warships in the Portuguese water in the coming days, bound for the Mediterranean, the General Staff of the Armed Forces (EMGFA) said on Sunday, noting that this is “a normal procedure”.

In a statement, EMGFA said that starting early Monday morning, for the next two days, the Portuguese armed forces would accompany a Naval Force of the Russian Federation while passing through the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

“This is a normal procedure whenever warships from non-NATO countries sail within the Portuguese EEZ,” the text stresses.

The two Russian warships will sail southwards from Biscay in Spain towards the Mediterranean, the statement said, adding that the ships would be shadowed while they were within the Portuguese EEZ.
