The National Association of Sergeants President António Coelho told Lusa news agency that the military “won’t accept being part of the liquidator committee of the Armed Forces or witness it standing still”. Coelho accused the government of “a lack of sensitivity, and worse, a lack of respect for the cornerstone of national sovereignty”. The Association of Armed Forces Officials added that the government is “gradually jeopardizing the military defence of the Republic”. It had been suggested in a governmental report that wages of top officials should be reduced.
