Archaeology enthusiasts in the Algarve can look forward to a lecture by John Needham on ‘Reconstructing Fossil Trees from the Jurassic Park Purbeck Forest’. It will take place on Tuesday, January 7 at two venues: the São Brás Museum at 3pm and later at Lagoa’s Convento de São José at 7.15pm.
This will be the first lecture organised by the Algarve Archaeological Association (AAA) in 2014.
Reconstructing large organisms from their fossil remains is challenging because of the physical difficulties of evacuation and the fragmentation of parts. Moreover, reassembling a whole plant for detailed study can be impractical due to its sheer size, weight and parts.
This talk is about how archaeologists are now using laser scanning to reconstruct and visualise a fossil tree from a newly-discovered fossil forest site of the late Jurassic age.
AAA lectures are in English and speakers come from countries throughout Europe and are usually at the fore of their subject.
All are welcome to attend the lectures and a charge of €6 is requested to finance continuing archaeological works throughout Portugal, but particularly in the Algarve.
Maxine Srivastava from the association said: “As we commence the New Year, we look forward to again funding students from the University of Faro. Helping finance students through their final year of archaeological studies is something close to the heart of our president, Jenny Compton.”
Lunch and dinner can be arranged on the day, but registration should be made in advance.
