April art show in Tavira

An exhibit of sculpture and stoneware clay vessels by sculptor Wolfgang Spengler and ceramic artist Alexis Strong will be on display in April at the André Pilante gallery in Tavira.

Wolfgang Spengler, who was born in Germany and has been living in the Algarve for 12 years, carves in marble, alabaster and other stone and wood, displaying a versatile talent through a vast range of subjects – from animals and human figures, to sea life and fossils.

Alexis Strong, who began working in clay over 20 years ago in Santa Fe, New Mexico and moved to the Algarve in 2014, creates hand-built ceramic vessels which “evoke an ancient, anthropological and ritual ancestry”, with their unglazed and richly textured surfaces.

The André Pilante gallery is located a few steps from the Praça da República behind the Câmara building on Rua Amália Rodrigues. The exhibit runs from April 15 through April 30. The artists’ receptions will be on April 15 and 16, from 4pm to 7pm.
