João Rendeiro, the former banker who fled Portugal to avoid a five-year eight month jail term, has heard today that a second term, for 10 years, has been confirmed by the Appeals Court. Both condemnations are connected to cases in which he was found guilty of tax fraud, abuse of confidence and money-laundering during his years at the head of BPP bank. Mr Rendeiro is currently in a South African jail, fighting extradition to Portugal, apparently in the full knowledge that his time spent in jail near Durban will not ‘count’ if his fight fails.
