Appeal to help Cape Verde disaster victims

Appeal to help Cape Verde disaster victims

The Portuguese Red Cross has launched an appeal to help the hundreds of people on Cape Verde whose land and homes have been destroyed by the ongoing volcanic eruption on Ilha do Fogo.
The appeal is designed to boost one already instigated by the Red Cross in Cape Verde where as many as 1,500 people are going through extraordinary hardship as a result of the disaster.
Money raised will go towards the purchase of food and other essentials, while any clothes collected will be distributed.
In the Cape Verdean archipelago, the government has appealed to everyone to donate “one day’s worth” of their salaries to help victims.
Damages so far amount to around €45 million, mostly in the area known as Chã das Caldeiras. The Pico de Fogo eruption began on November 23. No-one has been killed but numerous locals have had to be treated for inhaling ash and poisonous gases, while the fallout has destroyed much of the island’s fertile agriculture. The last time Pico de Fogo erupted was 1995.
Donations to the Red Cross appeal can be made by bank transfer: IBAN PT50.0036.0087.99100020657.94. Donations are tax-deductible, but to benefit from the deduction donors should access the Red Cross website (www.cruzvermelha.pt) and fill in a form in Portuguese.
