Years on from the crimes that brought him to justice, former mayor of Pedrógão Grande Valdemar Alves has heard that he won’t, in the end, have to spend seven years behind bars. Appeal court judges have reduced his sentence for 13 crimes of prevarication, and others for qualified fraud, to five years – suspended. A similar outcome has blessed Bruno Gomes, former deputy mayor of Leiria – sentenced for six years behind bars for his part in the criminal scheme. His sentence was reduced to four years, suspended.
