The long and painful process of attempting to apportion blame in the tragic death of a motorway roadworker almost two years ago moved forwards a little more today as appeal court judges in Évora ruled that former minister of the interior Eduardo Cabrita did indeed “have the conditions to tell his driver to comply with rules (of the Highway Code)”. Mr Cabrita has always maintained that he was “just a passenger” in the accident involving his official BMW on the A6 motorway on June 18. The association of auto-mobilised citizens has always maintained he was the ‘person in ultimate charge’ in the vehicle, by dint of his position.
