APAA: Introducing … Warren Hunter

A name of a famous actor? Title of a film? No. A warren (hound) hunter is a breed of dog. Also known to aficionados as a Mediterranean rabbit-hunting dog, or a Podengo (Podenco in Spanish).

In short, an introduction to ‘Millie’, whose owner doesn’t feel she is suitable for an apartment, being young, fit and active. The owner is happy to have her re-homed to someone who has better accommodation. Millie has a very happy nature, is eager to please, willing to do anything for food.

Food is a good training device. “She is smart. I’ll give you that!” Gary at Pet Park (Mexilhoeira Grande) beams. “Quick, intelligent. A proper hunting dog.”

Pet Park has an ideal place, fenced off, where all their dogs, boarders or lodgers can roam, hunt and sniff. The boarders get to go home. Lodgers need a forever home. Canines can be a man or woman’s best friend. They are, after all, reliant on humanity for their food, water and shelter.

APAA, Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, is grateful that there are shelters and foster parents who are willing to take on life’s dregs, dumped ones, abandonees.

Contact Gary and Wendy at Pet Park Kennels and Cattery on 926 660 465 to enquire about lodgers ‘Millie’, ‘Rafa’ or ‘Lilly’.

Head of their ‘Pop-Up’ shops Anita has several abandoned furry canine cuddlies. Two have dived off in one direction, whilst others charge off greeting the arriving company. Anita’s ‘Kings & Queens’ special buffet lunch held on April 30 was a great delight. In charge of the royalty-themed day out in the sunshine, Anita and her APAA cohorts, Jenny, Jane, Patricia, Alla, and Liz welcomed, fed and hosted 45 guests.

The themed crown affair was topped by the handmade head gear made by friends of APAA, Paula and Pasi, who run an alternative medicine practice from Portimão.

APAA’s events and ‘Pop-Up’ shops are becoming more and more popular. The growing attraction: to meet and greet friends, take part in a community event, or browse and buy at leisure. Their two charity outlets, in Alvor and Silves, also help boost their coffers. “Membership is, thankfully, on the upward trend,” said Jenny Clarke who is grateful for the increasing interest and community spirit.
