It’s a desperate appeal for anyone “with taste and culture”. Olhão as we know it faces “a greater threat than when the French invaded”. Council gentrification plans promise to “destroy” the old town’s baixa district, replacing the quaint cobbles that characterise the winding streets with machine-cut stone, and much worse.
This is the message from citizens group I LOVE OLHÃO, fighting hard to save the town from what it considers to be the scourge of out-of-touch planning.
A meeting tomorrow night (November 8) at Olhão’s Sociedade Recreativa will be the perfect place for people to have their say. The council’s plans will be on display and an architect who has a very different idea for the spending of council money will be giving a talk.
An email going out this evening to all “I Love Olhão” supporters suggests the architect has tried to “advise the council” of a better way of improving the historic town.
Everyone is welcome. The meeting is at 6pm. See I Love Olhão’s facebook page for more details.
