Anti-mining protestors force secretary of state to abort scheduled visit

Secretary of State for Energy João Galamba visited Boticas, Montalegre, yesterday and came up face-to-face with the strength of local feeling against government plans to press ahead with lithium mining. A group of banner waving people surrounded the vehicle he was travelling in, forcing him to abort his planned schedule.

Galamba’s zeal to promote the exploration of lithium has already lead to numerous reports hinting at corruption (click here).

Say reports, he did in fact retrace his route, with a GNR posse for protection. But the visit to a nearby information centre ended up still not taking place.
