Another roaring success for Play in the Parque

Forest performance produced by Aljezur International School

An audience of over 300 people recently gathered in the forest near Barão de São João to witness the spectacle of this year’s Play in the Parque “Jack and the Bean Sprout”.  Produced by Aljezur International School, this annual show has been performed in the same location since 2006.

The cast included students and teachers of the school as well as members of the local community. The narrators were magnificently played by A level Drama students, Luna Randisek, Gil Costa Lobo and brothers Floris and Pepijn Jones.  A few tears were shed when the curtain came down as these four students have been in the Play in the Parque for many years and are now leaving school to pursue their chosen career paths.

The incredible costumes were created by Susie Mayes who teaches at both Aljezur and Barlavento International Schools, and the play was written and directed by school director Karen Whitten.

The wicked witch, Bruxa Belle, hilariously played by Tanya McGarrell told the audience that she was selling Storyland and if everyone was not gone in 20 minutes, she would turn them into fish fingers and eat them … with ketchup. Sean the Leprechaun, played by Indigo Randisek, came up with a plan and instructed everyone to “think happy thoughts” in order that Bruxa Belle would lose her powers.

Of course, there are always happy endings in Storyland and Bruxa Belle saw the error of her wicked ways and decided not to be evil anymore.  The audience joined in the final dance to “We Are Family” and everyone left the forest with huge smiles on their faces. And most definitely thinking happy thoughts!
