When I say this wine is a novelty, I am referring to it being new on the shelves here in the Algarve. For this is just one of the many pioneering variations on the Alvarinho grape from arguably its greatest producer, Soalheiro.
A few years ago, they started to move towards organic/biodynamic production at one of their vineyards which produces their premium labels, specifically the oaked Reserva and the well-known Primeiras Vinhas labels; then came Terramatter, an unfiltered and very lightly oaked Alvarinho made with minimal intervention, and most recently launched in 2017 this Natur Pur Terroir.
This is their first wine produced without added sulphites, taking the natural winemaking principal that step further, and what we have here is a genuinely pure expression of the Alvarinho variety.
The wine is a lemony yellow containing a very fine cloudy sediment with intense citric and white fruit notes on the nose, well-textured in the mouth with great acidity and a long dry finish – €16.95 at Apolónia.
