Miguel Reis renounced his position as mayor of Espinho yesterday

Another night in police custody for ex-mayor of Espinho

Miguel Reis, the former Socialist mayor of Espinho, detained since Tuesday with four others on suspicions of corruption, prevarication, abuse of power and the trafficking of influences, is understood to have renounced his council position in the hope that this will satisfy magistrates that there is no risk of further crimes being committed (albeit he has professed his innocence). Even so, the public prosecutor’s office is asking that he, and Espinho investor Francisco Pessegueiro should remain in preventive custody. For now both  defendants in this latest investigation into alleged corruption have to wait until tomorrow to hear their bail terms, spending another night in police cells adjoining the court building. The other three defendants named so far have already been released, to return to court for bail measures tomorrow.
