Another 2,449 new cases of Covid: more than half in Greater Lisbon area

Today’s Covid bulletin has reinforced the picture of a 4th wave in which Portugal, like so many other countries in Europe, has the Delta variant in fairly rampant community transmission. The number of new cases is up by 2,449 in the last 24-hours; the number of deaths still considered ‘low’ when compared to case numbers: just five, four of which were flagged in the Lisbon/ Vale do Tejo health region. As news programmes are stressing, case numbers are up throughout the country. President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has warned against people looking at this too negatively, given that deaths are ‘much reduced’ in comparison.
