At the start of a new year, we like to thank your readers for their support in 2013 for the ‘Friends of Canil Portimão’ association.
Last year we found homes for more than 200 dogs – half of them went abroad and half stayed in Portugal.
We also found homes for around 50 cats. Most stayed in Portugal but thanks to a generous sponsor we were also able to send cats to Germany and Holland.
At the end of 2013, we started a sterilisation programme for strays and the aim is to sterilise at least four dogs a month – if we get more sponsors then we will be able to sterilise even more animals.
Good news also came when we found out we were the chosen charity at the Algarve Dog Show and we had two sold-out lunches to benefit our charity.
A donation from the APAA was used to build a cat home for our resident cats, a washing place for the dogs and an area for sick dogs.
But it was also a difficult year, as more and more people left their dogs to fight for their lives in the streets and the number of kittens and puppies found in rubbish bins was unbelievable.
Cruelty towards animals was also shocking – even when you think you’ve seen it all…
For 2014, we hope again for your support with donations or time as a volunteer to make the life of our dogs and cats just a little bit easier. If you would like to make a difference in a dog’s life, then your help as a dog walker would be much appreciated. Dog walks take place on Thursday mornings from 9.30am to 12 noon – this is the only time the dogs go out during the week.
