Animal Corner: parking pets and roundabouts

The main hurdle of owning pets, apart from planning your day-to-day lives together, is where to park them. The prospect of summer holidays is over. However, the odd weekend looming ahead … Christmas … Yikes No! Yes! APAA’s friendly friend Pet Park are, as we speak, taking bookings.

They are still doing special rates of stayovers whilst owners go on an overnight or two jamboree. Believe it or not, Christmas bookings are being taken well in advance. PP’s popularity has grown with Gary and Wendy’s approach to seasonal love-in for the animals in their care.

“We have doggy Christmas Day special,” Gary writes in his catch-up email. “Stocking filled treats and a lip-smacking dinner.” Can we come too? They have two permanent staff helping them out. Cracking!

In a roundabout way, a recent, very happy ending for ‘Flow’, who was being treated rather badly by owner, and ‘Good fairy’d’ off by APAA to ARA’s shelter. After 10 days of recovery and love, she was re-homed. There you go!

Association for Protection of Animals Algarve has a long list of those they have helped out. Unsurprisingly, ‘Here to Help’ is their motto. “We used to be a shelter.” Jenny’s memory of the old days lights up her face. “So, we know what it is all about. We are not backseat drivers. Now our aim is to advise, assist and cut down the number of feral cats. Re-homing abandoned animals.”

APAA has recently been helping Cadela Carlota, who have now purchased the land for their existing shelter; and ARA, Animal Rescue Algarve, with their pilot ‘Legacy for Pets’ and a sturdy industrial washing machine. “They help us with abandoned animals, as do Pet Park. We really are a huge network of helping hands!” said Jenny.
