APAA’s historical move from rescue shelter to helping others in need has become synonymous with their mantra ‘Here to Help’. The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve believes in assisting all shelters and all animals.
Jenny Clarke, president, is wearing a broad smile. “It is incredible, but we come across all shapes and sizes!” Shelters? “Some are personal projects and desperately need financial help. Others are fairly large, have volunteers and staff but still find it necessary for a helping hand or two.”
As did a couple who thought, when they started rescuing animals, that it would somehow stop. “It never seemed to end!” Sofia is actively looking after a broad spreadsheet of animals with partner Kent. Wigglestail, an official charity outside of Messines, has been assisted by APAA to create better housing for their canine lodgers. With over 30 dogs and over 50 farm animals, there is more than enough to keep them busy: horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, rabbits … What a busy pair!
BLiP was buzzing with visitors on October 14 and 15. APAA had a small community stand, as did ARA, Animal Rescue Algarve. “There was a lot of solid interest shown this year.” Jenny was pleased to see familiar faces amongst newcomers. Organisers afpop certainly created an enormous success this year.

Don’t forget to pop into our charity shops in Alvor and Silves. You will find friendly, helpful, volunteer staff. Take stuff no longer needed. Find something new you like or a gift.
Just a gentle reminder – when the charities are out on the shopfloor collecting donations for food, please be generous, every little helps a large, ever-growing group of animals in need, care, love and attention. It costs!
