More families are daily dropping pets at the local pounds while complaints about animal mistreatment are also on the rise in Portugal.
The current estimates suggest that over 10,000 animals are abandoned yearly and that around half-a-million animals are currently homeless.
Portuguese Animal Rights League President, Maria do Céu Sampaio, commented: “The situation has worsened since 2011. Last year was chaotic and 2013 already appears to be even worse.”
