The 17th century Capela da Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos and the Igreja Matriz de Olhão are to be classified as monuments of public interest, according to the local authority.
The two buildings are located in the historic centre of the town and the first stone of the chapel was laid in 1698 during the reign of D. Pedro II.
The chapel forms an annexe to the church and has its origins in an ossuary that was later transformed into an oratory and then into a chapel.
It was named after the religious cult of Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos held by the Olhão fishermen.
