An Irish perspective

A visit to the monastery of Batalha followed by lunch in the medieval walled town of Óbidos will be taking place on September 17.

The monastery is a UNESCO world heritage site and was first brought to the attention of European architectural circles by the Irish architect James Cavanagh Murphy in his publication Plans, Elevations, Sections and Views of the Church of Batalha in the late 1700s.

The trip, organised by the Irish Association, will be led by Professora Ana Rita Padeira, an expert in the life and work of Murphy.

Participation in the trip costs €35 and includes transportation by coach, admission to the monastery and lunch.

The coach will be leaving from Estoril at 9.45am and will return by 5pm.
