This year the Amigos de Música will be celebrating 20 years of successful collaboration with the São Lourenço Cultural Centre in Almancil.
The Amigos is an international group of around 100 members who support the musical activities at the centre, including concerts by classical artists and other musical activities.
The principal aim of the group is to raise money to help support recitals, concerts and musical events of all types at the centre while also funding the development of young Portuguese musicians.
President of the Amigos de Música, Barry Shaw, said: “The Amigos came into being in 1990 when a group of music-loving friends were brought together and by their annual subscription were able to underwrite all the costs of the concerts throughout the year.
“The Amigos have flourished for two decades now and with their helping hand, so has the wonderful music at São Lourenço.”
Coinciding with the anniversary, there will be two concerts held at the centre by Australian pianist, Piers Lane (also see What’s On section).
They will be mainly featuring the music of Chopin and, for the first time, will be performed by candlelight on February 10 and 13 from 7.30pm.
Piers Lane is an internationally-renowned artist who has played in more than 40 countries with major orchestras around the world.
He has an extensive back catalogue of work on various music labels and has also presented more than 100 programmes for BBC Radio 3, including the popular series The Piano.
Tickets to the Piers Lane concerts cost 25 euros per person for non-members of the Amigos, with wine and canapés available before the performance and during the interval.
Entrance is free to members.
