American tourists mugged by gang

A COUPLE from the United States were mugged by a gang of youths in Cerro de Malpique, Albufeira, on Monday night.

The couple, who are in their thirties, were staying in the Algarve for a week and had gone out for a walk at around 10.30pm when a group of eight youths approached allegedly brandishing a gun and demanded money.

In the confusion, the male victim fell to the ground and sustained minor injuries to his face, for which he received treatment. The gang made off with mobile phones, credit cards and money.

The gang is also suspected of robbing a group of young people the same night on Avenida dos Descobrimentos. This time, it is believed the gang used a knife to threaten the victims and made off with mobile phones and money.

No arrests

The Judicial Police are investigating the case with the help of the Albufeira GNR but at the time The Resident went to press, none of the gang members had been arrested.

However, it is believed that most of the gang members have been identified by using witness descriptions from both incidents.

Meanwhile, there will be more police on duty over Easter in Albufeira to reinforce security and ensure public safety.
