American tourist suffers multiple fractures in badly-timed dive onto tourist boat

A 26-year-old US tourist had to be rushed to hospital after he “dived into the water and landed on top of a tourist pleasure-boat” in Albufeira over the weekend.

It is not clear whether the young man was head first, or jumping when he hit the deck.

He is understood to have launched himself into the water from a height of six-metres off a rock on S.Rafael beach just as the boat passed underneath.

“By luck, none of the tourists or crew were hit”, reports tabloid Correio da Manhã, as the tourist fell on the boat’s stern.

He is understood to have suffered “various fractures”, particularly to one of his arms and wrists.

The injured man was transported “in the boat into which he had fallen” to Albufeira marina, and from there was handed over to Bombeiros (volunteer firefighters) and an INEM emergency team.

He was ‘immobilised’ and taken to Faro hospital, accompanied by specialist VMER reanimation back-up.

His condition today (Monday) is unclear. Updates may follow.
