American sommeliers “very surprised” by quality of Algarve wines

Guests described experience as “very positive”

The Algarve Wine Commission (CVA) welcomed a group of American sommeliers and retailers for a wine tasting session at Morgado do Quintão in Lagoa on Monday, May 9.

The event was organised by ViniPortugal, the entity that manages the Wines of Portugal brand which promotes Portuguese wines abroad, and featured wines from a selection of local winemakers, such as host Morgado do Quintão, Convento do Paraíso (Silves), Quinta dos Vales (Lagoa) and Aveleda, Villa Alvor (Portimão).

The list of guests featured the following sommeliers and retailers from the USA market: Scott Tyree, Ali Schmidt, Arthur Hon, David Lynch, Kirk Walker, Sian Ferguson and Julie Dalton. They were accompanied during their visit by Eugénio Jardim, the Ambassador of Wines of Portugal in the USA.

The experience was described as “very positive”, with guests “very surprised by the quality of the Algarve’s wines, namely those made using the Algarve’s native grape variety, Negra Mole,” said the CVA in a statement to the press.
