The Algarve Pirates are preparing for the coming 2016 Portuguese League season and training has begun at their HQ in Mexilhoeira Grande, between Portimão and Lagos. Already 10 new hopeful players have trained with the Pirates.
American Football is still a very new thing in Portugal, with 10 regular teams making up the league. The Pirates were the first team from the Algarve to enter the league and this will be their fourth competitive season.
In September, the Pirates are inviting anyone interested in playing a new sport to join them for training. No specialist equipment is needed, just your sports kit, football or rugby boots and your enthusiasm.
“One of the beauties of the sport is that there are several completely different positions that make up the team and each require slightly different skills and abilities,” says Michael Reeve, Defensive Coordinator for the Algarve Pirates. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all game and just because you may have struggled to enjoy other sports, you should not be put off trying American Football. We need speed, strength, agility and size – but not all of those things are required for every player.”
Algarve Pirates play and train at the sports centre in Mexilhoeira Grande. Training is Tuesday from 9pm until 11pm and Thursday from 9.30pm until 11pm. In September there is a third session on Fridays starting at 9.30pm.
