A TOUR company in Rio de Janeiro could see its licence stripped away for providing tourists with an alternative tour of life in the city’s slums, including photo opportunities with drug gang leaders.

Sunday’s Folha de São Paulo newspaper reported on the tours, after sending an undercover reporter disguised as a foreign tourist on the 55-dollar tour.

This led the city’s tourism chief, Ruben Medina to say that the company, Private Tours, could lose its licence if the article published was accurate. “It’s not necessary to do this kind of tour in Rio; there are a lot of wonderful attractions,” he told international news agency, Reuters. According to the owner of Private Tours, several companies have for years given tours of the city’s slums, offering tourists a controversial alternative to the city’s beaches and an insight into the lives of the more than one million people who live there.
