Safe Communities Algarve visited Alte on Sunday when suddenly the village came under attack. The place descended into chaos as the army arrived running through the streets carrying guns. People were observed being carried away on stretchers.
Tension increased as an army tank raced through the village and several journalists appeared caught up in the mayhem.
An SCA spokesman said: “It was risky taking these photos but we needed them for evidence.”
